Most color changes are very expensive as the car has to be striped of all its moldings, seals and trim.All this takes time and time is money so you are already adding a lot of extra labor to an already expensive job. Good paint work is very expensive even for the cheapest job. Out here in the mid west we get up to 7500.00 for a color change depending on the color and size of car and most of all the body work involved to make your car smooth again. Any car with age generally has a lot of dings and dents, new paint work magnifies these blemishes and NO SHOP OWNER, wants to have his name on a new paint job that’s full of dings and dents, so you wind p having to do a lot of body work to bring the cars body back up to standard, again a lot of labor which drives the cost up Most reputable shops are getting 50 to 100 bucks an hour. A gallon of paint depending on the color you want can cost 800.00 bucks Then your primers and sealers and activators are extremely expensive and again drives up the cost.

If I was in your shoes and given the color you want in order to keep cost to a minimum I would do a two tone paint job. You already have a great color for a base color with your black. So put that gray matter to work and come up with a design to where all the body shop has to do is paint an area the is free of dents and dings silver. For example, do the top and top of your hood and trunk lid in silver maybe leaving your tail spoiler black if you have one. Normally you don`t find a lot of dents on the roof and tops of the ood and trunks so the shop owner won`t have any objections to putting his name on the top half of your car. If your car is free of dents on its sides, but I doubt it if its ever been to Wal-mart or K mart, You could entertain the thoughts of some sort of silver paneling down the sides with maybe a silver racing strip down the middle of your hood,roof and trunk. To save cost on this one you are going to have to think out of the box a little. Also, now that you are armed with this info I would also suggest you taking your car to one of the local body shops that has a reputation for doing custom type work and passing all this across them. Let them know up front you do not want to spend an arm and leg for this work. But, You do want a written warranty. But be nice whenyou ask for the warranty. You have already ask for a cheap job. Just casually as your leaving say , OH by the way is your work guranteed. If they are capable of doing your type work and cheap he won`t have a problem giving you some kind of gaurantee on his work.

The one thing you want to stay away from is the shop owner that starts giving you a bunch of maybes, like telling you well this could go wrong and that could go wrong driving the prices up. If you get one of these fellows , then you run for your life, as he is more than likly a scam artist.

A good shop is one that knows exactly what they are doing, can give you an exact price for your work and gladly hand you a writtenwarranty when he is finished.

One other thing. Back in 1970 I had a 67 Dodge RT originally white. I re-painted it Gun metal silvergray and trimed it out in black and it was awesome. I love that car
